Many countries today struggle with appropriate space management. One of the relevant issues is the surplus of land zoned as buildable. The paper analyses literature, government reports, and expert opinions and identifies the primary drivers of changes in policies for buildable land zoning that were introduced to the Polish spatial planning law in 2015. The example of the Polish planning regulations shows that ambiguous laws fail to produce the expected results and need to be specified more precisely, particularly regarding nomenclature, even if the intention behind them is right. The latest research paper by Anita Kukulska-Kozieł, PhD Eng., Associate Professor at the University of Agriculture is out:

The Polish rural landscape is inherently connected with a special, centuries-old system that combines agricultural tradition and biodiversity. One such unique area is the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. Research by the Department of Land Management and Landscape Architecture's (@KGPiAK) team has confirmed that the vanishing of agricultural systems due to socioeconomic and environmental changes threatens biological and cultural diversity. » Results of the first edition of the Rooted in Cultural Heritage contest

The first place: Jaśkowice-Zdrój. A Forgotten Health Resort near Kraków
The prize of 2000 złotys went to the author, Adrian Musiał (Małopolskie Voivodeship).
Expert commentary: The printed submission and poster present Jaśkowice-Zdrój, a ‘forgotten health resort near Kraków’. The author offered an account of the effort by local associations to restore the historical awareness of local residents. He has demonstrated that the place's history is worth preserving as its memory is vanishing.

The second place: The Wedding Palace
The prize of 1000 złotys was awarded to the author, Vanessa Przysucha (Śląskie Voivodeship).
Expert commentary: In her description, the author pointed out the subtle combination of architecture and art. The submission surpasses an engineering framework, secondary by nature, and reaches a higher level of abstraction. The artistic time machine moved the 1980s building forward into a futuristic future where the somewhat brutal form is softened with a play of light and shade.

The third place: In a Silesian Home: Art and Pastime
Its author, Franciszek Owczarek (Śląskie Voivodeship) received 500 złotys.
Expert commentary: The author first describes selected, mostly religion-themed, oleographs and their role in nineteenth and twentieth-century homes. The other part of the submission focuses on historical radio programmes. The author has demonstrated that oleographs and radio programmes that are part of the cultural heritage of Silesia have to be remembered, shared, and preserved.

Researchers from the Department of Land Management and Landscape Architecture (follow us on Twitter: @KGPiAK) investigated the impact of the growth of cities and suburban zones on the preservation of cultural heritage and landscape of a former village near Kraków, Bronowice Małe. The rural layout of Bronowice Małe is a listed municipal heritage site, but its allure dooms it to severe development pressure.
Extensive architecture and history studies yielded an archetypical Bronowice-style house, which is a modern continuum of traditional wooden architecture, the so-called Bronowice-style cottage. The proposed original building cohesion method (BCM), a combination of field survey and numeric taxonomy can assess the consistency of new housing buildings with traditional rural building standards. The results show that even though Bronowice Małe is protected by law as a listed site, the place is being developed at variance with applicable regulations and against the look of buildings that form the historical core of the village. The field research identified a dynamic growth in multi-family buildings even though the local spatial development plan provides for single-family housing only.

Numerous development techniques and attributes that define the unique essentiality of archaic rural tourism websites in Poland have been identified. However, the use of e-folklore graphics on the websites has not been analysed. It is the first paper in Poland, and probably the world, focusing on the digital folklore of rural tourism. Enjoy:

A team from the Department of Land Management and Landscape Architecture has published a highly relevant research paper on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the importance of urban greenery to residents of Kraków in Land Use Policy!
The results show that over 75% of the respondents believed visits to green spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic to have had a very big or big influence on the reduction of their stress levels; for 54.2%, it had the greatest impact on the improvement of their general well-being. According to the research done at the Department of Land Management and Landscape Architecture, residents of Kraków are willing to travel substantial distances to commune with nature in an attractive place.
As the pandemic changed the public perception and importance of urban green spaces in Kraków, they need to be protected and further grown. It helps improve human well-being and mental state. You can easily read the entire paper on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the importance of urban green spaces to the public in Kraków:
